Food, toy drives still accepting donations

Posted: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 6:00 am

At the 181 Market, families can enjoy holiday fun while shopping for Christmas presents, and more importantly, donating toys to the Great Toy Drive. Hula-hoops are popular at the market this Christmas season, and Dec. 1, more than $1,000 worth of custom hula-hoops were donated, but not before 181 Market patrons enjoyed them first.

The 181 Market participates in WKRG News 5’s Great Toy Drive every year. Vendors are encouraged to donate their unique, handmade items to the drive, and customers can purchase toys to donate while doing their Christmas shopping, said Melissa Smith, the 181 Market’s manager.

This year, handmade hula-hoops have been popular donations and Christmas gifts at the market. Dec. 1, Paige Renka of Peace and Hoopiness brought her handcrafted hula-hoops to the market, and more than $1,000 worth of hula-hoops were donated to the toy drive.

Smith said she loves when vendors like Renka get involved in the toy drive and provide toys that can’t be found at a big chain store.

“I wanted to give our vendors an opportunity to share whatever they make or create, and also our customers who we see every week can bring whatever they like,” she said. “It’s also open to the public to bring their handmade items to the market to sell and donate. People with ideas can bring them to me.”

Dec. 14 and 15 is the last weekend to donate to the Great Toy Drive, and the market will be open both days from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Smith said. The toy drive accepts only new, unwrapped toys.

Saturday, Santa will be at the market to meet children and pose for photos.

“And everybody can come out and hula-hoop again if they want, and they can buy more hula-hoops to donate if they want,” Smith said.

For more information, contact Smith at 251-591-7340. The 181 Market is located in Fairhope on Highway 181 just south of Highway 32.
